Sandy Cape Light, Heritage lighthouse in Queensland, Australia.
Sandy Cape Light is a white conical tower with a red lantern dome standing about 26 meters high on the northern point of K'gari. The structure sits within a compound that includes several support buildings from its operating era.
The lighthouse was built in 1870 and represented the second major lighthouse built in Queensland following the state's formation in 1859. It became an important marker for ships navigating the challenging coastal waters.
The site contains preserved keeper's cottages and work buildings that show how lighthouse staff lived and worked during the 1800s. These structures reveal daily life in this remote coastal outpost.
Visitors reach the site by taking a ferry to K'gari and then driving a four-wheel vehicle through Great Sandy National Park. Planning ahead is important due to the remote location and limited access roads.
The tower's segments were manufactured in Leeds, England and shipped to Australia for on-site assembly in the 1870s. This prefabrication method was an engineering achievement for its time.
