Alexandra Railway Bridge, Heritage railway bridge in Rockhampton, Australia
The Alexandra Railway Bridge crosses the Fitzroy River using five metal truss sections of varying lengths. A pedestrian walkway runs alongside the railway tracks on one side of the structure.
Construction took place from 1898 to 1899, and it was named after Princess Alexandra of Wales at its opening. The structure brought modern truss engineering to the region's rail network for the first time.
The bridge shows how Queensland engineered its railway system as the region grew and developed its transport links. It became part of the story of how communities moved goods and people across the river.
The pedestrian walkway can be accessed from both sides of the river and offers a straightforward walk across. Wear comfortable shoes since you will be walking on metal grating and steel surfaces.
During World War II, the bridge was temporarily modified to carry American military vehicles and equipment. This unexpected wartime role shows how the structure adapted beyond its original railway purpose.
