Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands, Micronation in Coral Sea Islands, Australia
The Gay and Lesbian Kingdom covered several uninhabited coral atolls roughly 500 km (310 miles) off the coast of Queensland, with Cato Island serving as the main location. The group consisted of scattered sandbanks and reefs without permanently above-water landmass or natural freshwater sources.
Activists sailed aboard the Gayflower vessel to the islands in June 2004 and raised the rainbow flag on Cato Island to claim a symbolic territory for LGBT rights. The founders dissolved the kingdom in 2017 after Australia legally recognized same-sex marriage.
The founders designed their own rainbow flag and minted souvenir coins meant to symbolize the rights of same-sex couples. These items circulated among sympathizers and collectors who understood the project as a sign of protest.
The islands lie outside any regular shipping route and cannot be reached without dedicated equipment. A weather station remained the only permanent structure before the project was abandoned.
The founders left a commemorative plaque on Cato Island meant to recall the symbolic start of their campaign. The kingdom formally declared war on Australia in September 2004 after Canberra ignored its proclamation.
