Mungana Archaeological Area

Mungana Archaeological Area is an excavation site in Chillagoe, Queensland, containing remnants of mining infrastructure, residential structures, and a burial ground. Across the grounds you can see foundation ruins, old equipment pieces, and scattered artifacts that reveal how the mining community lived.

Mining at Mungana began in the 1890s under John Moffat's leadership, employing dozens of workers to extract minerals from the Girofla deposit. The settlement grew with the exploitation of these mineral resources and left a lasting mark on Queensland's industrial past.

The cemetery tells stories of the workers and families who lived through the mining era. The graves reflect the diverse origins and social backgrounds of people who came to build their lives here.

Visitors should watch for uneven ground and open foundation areas since the site remains partially exposed. Wearing sturdy shoes is advisable, and you should allow time to explore the different zones at a leisurely pace.
