Rocky Bluff Battery and Township

Rocky Bluff Battery is a historic tin processing site along the Walsh River in Watsonville featuring preserved tramway formations, processing stamps, and a stone weir across its grounds. The location encompasses roughly 4 hectares and displays the remains of early-1900s mining infrastructure.

The North Queensland Tin Mining Corporation established the battery in 1902 and began extensive tin processing operations. Sporadic activity continued until the mid-1920s, shaping the region's mining activity across two decades.

The settlement developed as a mining community with a school, hotel, and shop that drew electricity from the processing operations. These facilities reveal how daily life centered around the mine's needs.

The founding structures, foundations, and tramway formations are visible on site and available for exploration. The steep terrain requires appropriate footwear and careful navigation as you move through the grounds.

The landscape was so steep that wheeled vehicles could not travel the settlement's streets, forcing the use of specialized transport systems. This limitation shaped how materials and supplies had to be moved across the site.
