Bouénera

Bouénera is a summit in the Central Mountain Range of New Caledonia, rising approximately 460 meters above sea level. From the top, views stretch across the wider Pacific region that makes up this French overseas territory.

The summit became significant as a geographic reference point when the territory came under French control in 1853. The region has been shaped by Kanak settlement and presence for many centuries before this change.

The summit holds deep meaning for the Kanak people, who have maintained their connection to this land across generations. The landscape shapes how locals see themselves and their place in the territory.

Bring plenty of water and proper hiking gear when visiting, as this remote location has limited facilities nearby. Preparation is important because services and shelter are not available at or near the summit.

The summit provides an excellent vantage point for scientists studying plant and animal species that exist nowhere else on Earth. These creatures and plants evolved in isolation over millions of years within this island region.
