Nusatupe, Transport hub on small island near Gizo, Solomon Islands
Nusatupe is a small island near Gizo in the Solomon Islands and houses an airport serving regular flights to multiple destinations across the region. The terminal and runway form the center of the island's operations, which primarily functions as an aviation hub.
The island was created during World War II when American forces connected two separate landmasses using excavated material. This military construction laid the foundation for its later use as an airport.
The WorldFish research center on Nusatupe leads investigations in fisheries and aquaculture, supporting local fishing traditions and marine resource management.
Visitors can reach Gizo by water taxi or private boat from the airport jetty, with the journey taking around 10 minutes across the channel. Boat services operate based on demand, requiring some flexibility when planning your crossing.
In 2011, an elevation change in the middle of the runway was removed to create a fully level surface. This improvement made operations easier and safer for larger aircraft.
