Funafuti Conservation Area, Marine protected area in Funafuti atoll, Tuvalu.
The Funafuti Conservation Area covers coral reef, lagoon, and small islands on the western side of Funafuti atoll. The site includes six islets - Tepuka Vili Vili, Fualopa, Fuafatu, Vasafua, Fuagea, and Tefala - that you can reach by boat from Funafuti.
The government established this marine protected area in 1999 after consulting with landowners and local leaders. The formal protection status built on existing community management of the waters.
The local community calls this protected area Kogatapu and manages it through the Funafuti Falekaupule council using traditional rules. Visitors can see how the community works to protect its resources and treats the islands as an essential part of island life.
You can only reach the islets by boat from Funafuti, so arrange a trip with a local operator. Bring sun protection and check the weather, as boat trips depend on tides and waves.
The area holds over 70 species of indicator fish and more than 140 food fish species that support the reef ecosystem. This diversity makes it an important habitat for the island community's food supply and marine life.
