Tuvalu Sports Ground, Stadium in Funafuti, Tuvalu.
Tuvalu Sports Ground is the national stadium of Tuvalu, located in Funafuti, with a main playing field and grandstands that can seat around 1,500 people. The playing surface is made of river clay brought in from Fiji, laid over a base of coral.
The ground opened in 2004 as the first dedicated sports venue ever built in the country. Before that, Tuvalu had no proper facility for hosting national competitions or international matches.
Football is the main sport played here, and matches draw crowds from across the atoll who cheer loudly from the grandstands. Attending a game gives visitors a chance to see how central sport is to everyday life in Funafuti.
The ground sits close to the center of Funafuti and can be reached easily on foot from most parts of the main island. When attending events, bring water and sun protection, as the heat can be strong even in the shade.
The roof of the stadium carries a solar panel system that feeds electricity into Funafuti's power grid, not just powers the venue itself. This means the stadium doubles as part of the island's energy infrastructure.
