Kahoolawe, Volcanic island in Maui County, United States.

Kahoolawe is an unpopulated island in Maui County lying southwest of Maui itself and north of Molokini. Its highest point is an eroded summit, from which spreads a flat terrain of rocky soil with little vegetation.

For decades the site served as a target range for firing drills and air strikes until military use ceased in 1990. Since then, groups have been working to remove war munitions and reintroduce native species.

The island carries the name Kanaloa, a deity from ancient times associated with oceans and voyages. Local communities travel there now with approval to hold ceremonies at revered locations and rebuild their link to this particular piece of land.

Only organized groups with written permission from the governing authority may go ashore. Most areas remain closed because explosive remnants are still present and safety is limited.

During the rainy season the dry surface briefly transforms into a network of narrow streams that quickly seep away again. Seabirds use remote stretches of the coast to build their nests in rock crevices and raise their young there.
