West Maui Mountains, Shield volcano in United States
The West Maui Mountains, known as Mauna Kahalawai, provide critical habitats for many endangered species.
Formed over a million years ago through series of volcanic eruptions, it's also called the 'West Maui volcano'.
It holds great cultural significance to native Hawaiians who believe this is a sacred place.
Its tropical rainforest preserve provides natural water supply for the people and residents of Maui.
The mountain encompasses two groups of lavas, both of diverse magma type.
