Laie Hawaii Temple, Mormon temple in Laie, United States
Laie Hawaii Temple is a Mormon place of worship on the northeast coast of Oahu island, about half a mile from the Pacific. The white stone facade with finely carved reliefs stands among palm trees and manicured lawns that separate the building from the road.
The site opened in 1919 as the first Mormon religious building outside continental North America. The cornerstone was laid in February 1916 and marked the expansion of the community into the Pacific region.
The building forms a religious complex with the nearby university and a Polynesian cultural center that shapes the community of Lāʻie. Many visitors come from across the Pacific region and take part in ceremonies conducted in their own language.
A distribution center for religious garments and wheelchair access are available on the grounds. Ceremonies are held in several languages for worshippers from across the Pacific region.
The outer walls contain crushed lava rock and coral from the surrounding area that were used during construction. This material connects the building to the geology and seascape of the island.
