Sri Ganesha Temple of Alaska, Hindu temple in Anchorage, United States
The Sri Ganesha Temple of Alaska is a Hindu temple in Anchorage with a main worship hall, a shoe-removal area at the entry, and space for traditional ceremonies. The interior is laid out to support Hindu religious practice, giving worshippers a dedicated place to perform their rituals in this northern city.
Members of the local Hindu community began gathering informally in Downtown Anchorage in 1995, which led to the founding of a permanent place of worship. The temple was officially dedicated in 1999, marking the start of an organized religious home for the community.
The temple is dedicated to Ganesha, the Hindu deity associated with new beginnings and the removal of obstacles. Visitors can hear Sanskrit chanting during services and are often welcome to join the communal vegetarian meal that follows worship.
The temple holds regular worship on Sundays and is open to visitors from outside the community. Shoes must be removed at the designated area near the entrance before entering the prayer hall, as is standard practice in this tradition.
At the 1999 dedication ceremony, Inuit leaders joined in by performing traditional songs and drumming alongside the Hindu prayers. It was a rare moment where two very different spiritual traditions of the region came together in the same space.
