The Alaska Aviation Museum occupies the former Alaska Aeronautical Industries building on Lake Hood Seaplane Base. Its Main, Rasmuson, South and Cecil Higgins Restoration Hangars hold more than 30 aircraft, a flight simulator, two theaters and the Alaska Aviation Hall of Fame. Outside stands the Merrill Field air traffic control tower cab used from 1962 to 2002.

The museum was founded in 1977 by aviation enthusiasts and opened to the public in 1988 to preserve Alaska's aviation story. It documents how aircraft became vital to the region's development and connected isolated communities over the decades.
