Delaney Park Strip, Protected area in downtown Anchorage, Alaska.
Delaney Park Strip is a long green space occupying eleven blocks in downtown Anchorage, stretching from one major avenue to another. It contains six baseball fields, eight tennis courts, and two soccer fields that serve the local community for sports and recreation throughout the year.
The land was originally created in 1917 as a firebreak to protect the growing city. It became an airstrip where pioneer Noel Wien launched the first passenger flights from Anchorage in 1924, marking a turning point in the region's transportation.
Several memorials scattered throughout the park honor significant historical figures like Pope John Paul II and Martin Luther King Jr. These tributes shape how visitors experience the space and offer moments for quiet reflection as you walk through.
Parking is available along 10th Street on the park side between A Street and P Street in the downtown area. The open layout makes it easy to navigate, and you can find facilities for different sports based on the signage throughout the grounds.
From the 1920s until 1929, this land served both as an airstrip and a golf course at the same time, with planes and golfers sharing the space. The aviation operations eventually relocated to Merrill Field, ending this unusual dual arrangement.
