White Mountains National Recreation Area

The White Mountains National Recreation Area spans one million acres of mountains, rivers, and valleys across Alaska's northern wilderness terrain.

Native communities established traditional hunting and gathering practices in this region long before the area received its recreational designation.

Indigenous peoples maintain connections to the land through seasonal activities, including hunting and gathering of traditional resources.

The recreation area features 250 miles of maintained winter trails and thirteen public cabins that require advance reservations through an online system.

Winter trails are marked with tripod structures to guide visitors through the landscape when snow covers the regular path markers.
