Klondike, Gold mining region in Yukon, Canada.

Klondike is a region in Yukon, Canada, that stretches along the Klondike River and its tributaries, meeting the Yukon River near Dawson City. The landscape shows forested valleys, narrow waterways, and bare hillsides marked by decades of mining activity.

In 1896, miners discovered gold at Bonanza Creek, triggering a mass influx of people from around the world. Within less than two years, Dawson City and several mining settlements formed around the goldfields.

The name Klondike comes from the Hän word Trʼondëk, which describes the hammer-like action used to drive stakes for salmon fishing in the river. Today, members of the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin still live in the area and maintain their connection to the land.

Visitors planning to explore should come between June and September, when roads remain passable and daylight lasts longer. Weatherproof clothing and enough supplies are important, as stores and fuel stations often sit far apart.

Unesco added the area to its World Heritage list in 2023, highlighting centuries of interaction between Indigenous peoples and newcomers during the gold rush era. Many old mining scars remain visible across the landscape today.
