Mexiquillo, Natural park in Pueblo Nuevo, Mexico
Mexiquillo is a natural park in Pueblo Nuevo featuring mountain terrain with dense forests of pine and fir trees. The landscape includes steep hillsides, rocky outcrops, and cleared areas that break up the continuous woodland coverage.
The area began in the 1960s as a temporary railway construction camp when workers carved tunnels through the mountains. Decades later, visitors rediscovered the abandoned tunnels and the region eventually became a protected natural space.
Indigenous peoples moved through these mountains for centuries before settlement arrived. Their pathways and knowledge of the land still shape how people navigate the region today.
The terrain is steep and rough, requiring sturdy hiking boots and careful footing on slippery trails. Bring plenty of water, food, and warm layers since the park has no shops, restaurants, or lodging facilities.
Nine railway tunnels cut through the mountains, some barely 100 meters long while others stretch over one kilometer. Visitors can walk through these passages, which remain the most striking remnant of the old railway project.
