Van Nuys Airport, Public aerodrome in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, United States
Van Nuys Airport is a public aerodrome in the San Fernando Valley and features two parallel runways that serve different aircraft sizes. The terminal and facilities focus on private planes, charter flights, and smaller cargo operations.
The site opened in 1928 as Metropolitan Airport and served early aviation development in Southern California. During World War II, the Army took over the facility and used it for military training and logistics.
The name comes from the nearby community of Van Nuys, which was named after Isaac Newton Van Nuys, an early San Fernando Valley businessman. The grounds continue to attract film crews who shoot scenes here, as the taxiways and hangars often serve as backdrops for productions.
The facility sits on the north side of the San Fernando Valley and can be reached from the 405 Freeway via Sherman Way. Visitors should note that the aerodrome is mainly designed for business travelers, and the terminal offers limited public amenities.
The two runways have different orientations, which means pilots choose different approach paths depending on wind direction and weather conditions. This flexibility allows the aerodrome to operate continuously even when conditions change.
