The Naval Training Center spans 550 acres with 300 buildings featuring Spanish Colonial Revival architecture at the northern end of San Diego Bay.
Congress authorized construction in 1919, and the base officially opened in 1923 as a training facility for Navy and Naval Reserve personnel.
The center graduated thousands of naval recruits annually, transforming civilians into sailors through structured military training programs until 1997.
The former military installation now functions as Liberty Station, incorporating retail spaces, restaurants, cultural venues, and educational facilities.
The USS Recruit, a concrete replica of a warship built in 1949, remains permanently stationed on land within the complex grounds.
