Journey to Atlantis, Steel and water coaster in SeaWorld, San Diego, United States
Journey to Atlantis is an attraction that blends roller coaster and water ride elements at SeaWorld San Diego, guiding passengers through indoor halls and outdoor sections with drops and curves. The boats ride on rails and pass several descents, including a main plunge spanning roughly 83 feet in height, before arriving in a shallow splash pool.
The installation opened in 2004 and was the second version of this ride type in the SeaWorld chain. German manufacturer Mack Rides developed the technical concept with rail system and elevator lift specifically for this location.
The theme draws on the ancient legend of the sunken city, showing riders a fictional underwater world with glowing sets and artificial fog banks. Water jets and moving figure elements create the impression of gliding through old temples and ruins.
All riders should expect that spray can soak clothing, so lockers are available near the entrance. Wait times vary by day, with the queue winding through both covered and open areas.
An elevator mechanism lifts the boats indoors and simulates swaying movements like those at sea. During this ascent, water seeps through walls and floor, creating the impression that the boat travels through flooded chambers.
