Star of India, Iron-hulled sailing ship at Maritime Museum, San Diego, United States.
Star of India is an iron-hulled sailing ship at the Maritime Museum in San Diego, United States. The ship features three tall masts with numerous yards and carries a complete set of historic sails that are still raised during voyages today.
The ship was launched in 1863 on the Isle of Man and carried British emigrants to New Zealand for over 25 years. After decades as a storage hulk off Alaska, it was brought to San Diego in 1926 and restored there.
The name refers to the historic route between Europe and India that many ships of this type followed. Visitors can see aboard how sailors and passengers lived in narrow cabins and kept their belongings in simple wooden chests.
The ship is moored in the harbor and can be visited in good weather via steep stairs. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes because the decks become slippery when wet and many passages have low overhead beams.
The ship still sails out to sea several times a year under full sail, accompanied by a crew of volunteers. During these trips you can watch the large sails being set by hand, just as they were over 150 years ago.
