Royal Laundry Complex, Historial laundry plant converted in offices, headquarters of Disney Store since 2005
The Royal Laundry Complex is a group of industrial buildings in Pasadena with a main building from 1927, a drive-up building added later, and an annex showing Spanish Colonial Revival and Streamline Moderne architecture. The complex features massive concrete walls, decorative tiles at the entrance, curved lines, and large open spaces that were originally used for laundry production.
The complex was built in 1927 from a design by Gordon B. Kaufmann and replaced the old Pasadena Opera House at that location. In the years that followed, additional buildings were added, including a modern drive-up building in 1939 and a prominent rooftop sign for motorists in 1955.
The Royal Laundry Complex displays different architectural styles that reflect the history of the area. You can see how taste and building techniques changed over the decades, from the decorated tiles on the main building to the smooth lines of later additions.
