Del Mar is a coastal city in San Diego County that runs along the Pacific Ocean and sits between two lagoons. The western edge of the city is entirely taken up by beaches that open directly onto the sea.
Theodore Loop and his wife Ella founded the place in 1885 as a seaside resort. The town was incorporated in 1959 as a self-governing municipality with its own charter.
The racetrack, which stages horse racing every year between July and September, holds a firm place in the town's everyday life and traces back to connections with well-known figures from the entertainment industry. The tradition continues to shape the feel of the place during the summer months.
The school system is divided into two districts, with elementary students served by one district and secondary schools by another. Both districts cover different parts of the region around the town.
A few specimens of the Torrey pine grow here on natural ground, a tree species found only in this narrow coastal strip of California. The trees are not found growing wild anywhere else outside this small zone.
