Del Mar Fairgrounds

The Del Mar Fairgrounds is a large event venue along California's Pacific coast that contains multiple exhibition halls, an arena, and a one-mile oval racetrack. The grounds feature wide-open spaces designed to accommodate many different types of events and gatherings.

The grounds opened in 1936 and gained national attention two years later through a horse race that was broadcast across the country. During World War II, the site was temporarily converted into a military manufacturing facility that produced aircraft components.

The San Diego County Fair held here each summer displays farm products, crafts, and regional food that represent what the community values and creates. Visitors encounter traditions that have shaped local identity for many decades.

The grounds are well-organized with plentiful parking and clear pathways between different buildings and areas. Wear sturdy shoes since you will walk quite a bit, and bring protection from the sun, as large parts of the open grounds can be quite exposed.

Few visitors realize the grounds served briefly as an internment camp during wartime in addition to military manufacturing duties. This shift in purpose shows how much the site had to adapt during that period of history.
