The San Dieguito Heritage Museum in Encinitas displays historical photographs and artifacts that document the development of seven local communities in California. The collection includes personal memorabilia and archival materials that reveal how people lived in these areas before and after major changes.

Founded in 1988, the museum collects photographs and artifacts from the seven communities of the San Dieguito area: Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Del Mar, Encinitas, Leucadia, Olivenhain, Rancho Santa Fe and Solana Beach. It published San Dieguito Heritage by Maura Wiegand in 1993 and received a $5,000 challenge grant from the Thomas C. Ackerman Foundation in 1998. Rotarians helped improve its new location in 2007, and in May 2008 it opened southern California's first exhibit on local skateboarding.

The museum tells the stories of seven local communities and how these regions developed over time. Visitors can see how daily life and community connections shaped the area across different periods.

The museum is run mainly by volunteers, so opening depends on their availability; the site is at Heritage Ranch in Encinitas. Third-grade school groups come for a local history tour tied to their curriculum, so weekday mornings can be busy with classes. Call ahead before making a special trip.

The museum presented in 2008 the first skateboarding history exhibit in southern California, focusing on the local area. This unusual collection reveals how a grassroots sport became part of the regional story.
