Torrey Pines Golf Course, Golf course in La Jolla, California.
Torrey Pines is a facility with two championship courses along the Pacific in La Jolla, California. The South Course measures 7,698 yards (7,032 meters), the North Course 7,258 yards (6,636 meters), both running along bluffs overlooking the ocean.
William Bell laid out both courses in 1957 on city land above the ocean. Rees Jones redesigned the South Course in 2001 to prepare it for the 2008 U.S. Open.
The facility remains under ownership of the City of San Diego and stays open to all players as a municipal course. This kind of public access to terrain of this caliber is uncommon in professional golf.
Tee time reservations can be made up to 90 days ahead through the City of San Diego system or through the Lodge at Torrey Pines. Wind and fog from the ocean affect play, especially in the morning.
The South Course uses marine terraces and coastal cliffs, causing the ball to travel differently depending on elevation. The slopes and proximity to the water require adapted shots and altered club selection.
