Conrad Prebys Music Center, Music performance center at University of California San Diego, US
The Conrad Prebys Music Center is the music building of the University of California San Diego, located on the main campus in La Jolla, and it contains three performance halls of different sizes. The largest hall seats around 400 people, a mid-size hall around 170, and a third space is designed for experimental work.
The building opened in 2009, replacing the former music department that had been housed at a different part of the campus since the mid-1970s. The move brought all areas of the music program together in one place for the first time.
The center hosts regular concerts where students, faculty, and university ensembles perform throughout the academic year. The program covers a wide range of music, from classical works to contemporary sound experiments designed for the building's digital acoustic systems.
The building sits on the UC San Diego campus and is reachable by car, with parking lots nearby, or by public transit to the Gilman Transit Center and a short walk from there. It is worth checking the university's event calendar before visiting to know what is on and where to go on campus.
The walls and ceilings inside the halls are covered with triangular wood and plaster panels arranged in an uneven, asymmetric pattern. This was not a decorative choice but a deliberate acoustic decision, with each angle and surface calculated to shape how sound moves through the room.
