Scripps Coastal Reserve, Natural reserve in La Jolla, United States.
Scripps Coastal Reserve is a protected area along the California coast that combines coastal wetlands, rocky shores, and expansive underwater zones. The site features elevated terrain with canyons as well as subaquatic sections that drop steeply toward submarine channels.
The University of California acquired the underwater section in 1929 to establish research areas for the institution. Expansion followed in 1967 with the purchase of the William Black House and surrounding land.
Scientists and students from Scripps Institution of Oceanography conduct research on coastal flora, fauna, and environmental preservation strategies in this location.
Exploration of the elevated area is only possible through guided walks on select Saturdays. Access is limited to protect the fragile ecosystem and ongoing research activities.
The marine zone extends over 200 meters deep and connects with large underwater canyons. This deep water allows rare research into organisms normally found in much darker ocean regions.
