Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility

The Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility spans 780 acres near the Mexico-United States border and contains both medium and maximum security sections.

The prison opened in July 1987 as a reception center for Southern California inmates and expanded over time to include specialized housing units.

The facility maintains five interfaith chapels and incorporates diverse rehabilitation programs including educational workshops, substance treatment, and vocational training opportunities.

The prison operates industrial programs including a bakery producing 9,760 bread loaves daily and a shoe factory manufacturing 1,000 pairs of footwear.

Located on Otay Mesa, this correctional facility stands 1.5 miles from the Mexican border and remains the only state prison in San Diego County.
