Newport Pier, Ocean pier in Newport Beach, California
Newport Pier is a wooden walkway extending more than 1000 feet into the ocean in Newport Beach. The structure features a wide path where visitors can walk above the water and observe boats, fishing activity, and the ocean horizon.
An earlier dock called McFadden Wharf was built in 1888 for cargo operations but was destroyed by a major storm in 1939. The current pier was rebuilt in 1940 and has since served as a gathering place for the community.
Newport Pier remains connected to local fishing traditions, with the Dory Fishing Fleet operating at its base since the late 1800s. Visitors can purchase fresh seafood directly from fishermen who unload their daily catch, keeping a working maritime heritage visible in the community.
The pier is easy to reach by foot, bike, or car and is located near restaurants and shops. Parking can be limited, so walking a few blocks from a nearby lot may be necessary to reach the beach and pier.
The Dory Fishing Fleet at the base of the pier is one of the oldest continuously operating fishing fleets on the Southern California coast. Fishermen sell their catch daily, making it a living window into working maritime tradition.
