Arcadia is a charter city in Los Angeles County, California that stretches across roughly 11 square miles at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Residential areas with single-family homes alternate with commercial streets, while Baldwin Avenue forms a main corridor for shops and restaurants.
Elias Jackson Baldwin purchased around 8,000 acres of Rancho Santa Anita in 1875 and built his ranch there. The incorporation as a city took place in 1903 under his influence.
The Los Angeles County Arboretum sits on the grounds of a former ranch and now offers plants from around the world along with historic buildings from the late 1800s. Visitors walk through maintained theme gardens, see ponds with birds and experience a calm environment in the middle of the city.

During World War II, the Santa Anita racetrack served as California's largest assembly center for Japanese Americans under Executive Order 9066. Thousands of people were housed there under temporary conditions before being moved to more distant internment camps.
