Los Angeles County, Administrative county in Southern California, US.
Los Angeles County is a large administrative region in Southern California that covers roughly twelve thousand square kilometers and includes coastal zones, mountain ranges, valleys, and densely built residential areas. It contains eighty-eight independent cities along with smaller communities and stretches from the Pacific Ocean inland toward desert zones.
The county was created in eighteen fifty, shortly after California joined the United States, making it one of the first administrative divisions in the new state. Oil discoveries and the rise of the movie industry in the early twentieth century accelerated growth and transformed it into the second largest metropolitan region in the country.
Film and television production crews regularly work in neighborhoods, and local residents often speak of the industry as part of everyday conversation. Outdoor dining, beach gatherings, farmers markets, and performances in parks reflect a lifestyle shaped by sunshine and a strong connection to Latin American, Asian, and Mediterranean communities.
Visitors usually move around by car, but the Metro system operates trains and buses that connect central points across many neighborhoods and cities. Distances are large, and travel times depend heavily on traffic, which tends to slow during morning and evening rush hours.
Two of the largest container ports in the Western Hemisphere operate here, handling goods arriving daily from Asia and other parts of the world. The region is also home to more than five hundred plant species found nowhere else on Earth, most concentrated in the coastal hills and mountain slopes.
