The area was originally part of Rancho Sausal Redondo until 1905, when Charles B. Hopper subdivided the land. He named the new community after a Chicago neighborhood to reflect the development's planned residential character.
The Lawndale Elementary School District and Centinela Valley Union High School District provide educational services to the diverse population of 32,769 residents.
City Hall on Burin Avenue serves as the main location for administrative services, permits, and licenses. Residents and visitors can find information about local services and community programs at this central office.
A historic railway line called the Redondo Railway once ran through the area until 1933, eventually becoming part of the Pacific Electric Red Car system. This rail connection shaped early transportation and growth in the developing community.
