El Segundo, Coastal town in Los Angeles County, United States
El Segundo is a city in Los Angeles County, California, located along the Pacific coastline directly adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport. The community covers an area where residential neighborhoods, industrial facilities, and a narrow coastal strip exist side by side.
The Standard Oil Company built its second West Coast refinery here in 1911, which led to the establishment of a settlement that became an incorporated city in 1917. The name refers to this second refinery and means "the second" in Spanish.
The downtown district maintains numerous architectural elements from the early 1900s, featuring buildings that reflect the city's progression through different eras.
Several freeway exits connect the city to the wider Los Angeles region and the airport next door. A public beach provides access to the ocean, and local bus routes run to neighboring towns.
Most streets in the older part of town carry names that begin with letters from the corporate name Standard Oil. The layout of these streets reflects the company's original planning of the settlement for refinery workers.
