El Porto Beach, Public beach in Manhattan Beach, California
El Porto Beach is a public beach in Manhattan Beach with volleyball courts on the sand and a paved path for cycling and skating along the coast. The shoreline runs north to south with distinct areas for different water and land activities.
The beach developed around 1911 as part of a development project by George H. Peck, who divided the area into 83 business lots and 225 residential lots. This early planning shaped the modern neighborhood that exists today.
Local surfers gather at this beach due to its underwater canyon formation that generates larger waves compared to neighboring coastal areas.
The beach entrance and parking with meters are located at the western end of 45th Street, with restrooms, showers, and a snack stand nearby. The area can get busy during warm months, so arriving early gives you better choices for parking and space.
An underwater canyon beneath the seafloor creates larger waves here compared to neighboring beaches and attracts local surfers. When conditions align, the waves can reach twice their normal height and break in both directions over sandbars.
