Hermosa Beach, Beachfront city in Los Angeles County, US.
Hermosa Beach is a coastal city in Los Angeles County, California, stretching across a narrow strip between the Pacific and residential neighborhoods. The town divides into two zones: the beach area with pier and boardwalk, and the elevated neighborhood with homes on gentle hills.
The area belonged to the Spanish land grant Rancho San Pedro from 1784, which covered large parts of today's South Bay region. Incorporation as an independent city took place in 1907 after the settlement split from neighboring Redondo Beach.
The name comes from the Spanish word for beautiful, and along the main strip restaurants, bars, and surf shops line up side by side. On weekends the pier fills with anglers and walkers, while volleyball players train on the sand.
The paved beach path, called The Strand, connects the city with Manhattan Beach to the north and Redondo Beach to the south over several miles (1 mile equals 1.6 kilometers). On summer weekends parking can be difficult, so arriving early in the morning or by bicycle is worthwhile.
The city counts roughly 325 sunny days per year, with morning fog in spring being typical. Average temperatures reach around 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer and about 13 degrees Celsius (55 degrees Fahrenheit) in winter.
