Beverly Hills, Residential city in Los Angeles County, United States
Beverly Hills is a city in Los Angeles County, located southwest of the Hollywood Hills and entirely surrounded by Los Angeles. Residential neighborhoods with large homes spread between commercial streets, while parks and palm trees shape the layout.
The area evolved from an agricultural settlement called Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas in 1828 to an independent city in January 1914. Construction of estates for film producers followed shortly after incorporation.
Shopping along Rodeo Drive and dining at well-known restaurants remain central to daily life for visitors and residents alike. The streets feel polished and quiet, with carefully maintained gardens and wide sidewalks that define the local rhythm.
The city runs its own police, fire department, and water supply, separate from Los Angeles services. Visitors find the street grid easy to navigate, with parking available along main roads and in dedicated lots.
Residents challenged housing discrimination in the 1940s, taking their cases to court. Their efforts led to a 1948 Supreme Court ruling that outlawed restrictive covenants across the country.
