The Comedy Store is a stand-up comedy venue on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. The building houses three separate performance rooms with different sizes and atmospheres for nightly programs.
The Comedy Store was opened in April 1972 by comedians Sammy Shore and Rudy De Luca in a building that had housed Club Seville, then Ciro's nightclub, and later Ciro's Le Disc, where the Byrds were discovered in 1964. After a divorce settlement, Mitzi Shore took over operations in 1973 and bought the building in 1976, expanding it with a 450-seat main room. In 1979, a comedians' strike against the no-pay policy led to performers being paid for their sets.
Comedians call the venue a training ground where they test new jokes and refine their craft in front of audiences who attend shows regularly. Guests see performances from recognizable names and rising talent in a room known for improvisation and spontaneous moments.
Multiple shows run every evening, and guests can purchase admission online or at the door. Drinks and food are served during performances, and seating is assigned on availability.
In 1974 the club hosted the wedding reception of Liza Minnelli and Jack Haley Jr.; the Comedy Store signs were covered with ones reading "Ciro's" for the night, and police briefly closed Sunset Boulevard so guests could reach their limousines.
