Stahl House, Modernist residence in Hollywood Hills, United States.
Stahl House is a modernist glass and steel residence in the Hollywood Hills offering wide views over Los Angeles. Its outer walls are entirely made of glass, allowing interior and exterior spaces to merge.
Pierre Koenig built the house in 1960 as part of the Case Study House program, an initiative exploring new forms of living in California. The structure went up in just a few months and became a landmark of modern architecture.
Photographer Julius Shulman captured an image in 1960 showing two women seated inside while city lights glowed behind them. That photograph helped shape how the world imagined California living in the postwar years.
Visitors can only see the building through guided tours that must be booked in advance. Tours usually run during daylight hours and provide insight into construction and layout.
The structure extends on steel beams over the cliff edge and appears to float above the city. On clear evenings, the lights of Los Angeles reflect in the glass walls of the room.
