El Greco Apartments, Historic apartment building in Fairfax district, Los Angeles, United States
El Greco Apartments is an apartment building featuring Spanish Colonial Revival and Mediterranean Revival architecture in Los Angeles' Fairfax neighborhood. The structure displays a red tile roof, stucco walls, and a decorative brick courtyard typical of its architectural style.
The building was constructed in 1929 as a twelve-unit complex in Westwood Village and faced demolition. In 1985, it was relocated to the Fairfax district where it was preserved and later adapted for new purposes.
In its early years, this residence sheltered notable figures from the film industry such as director Michael Curtiz, actor Joel McCrea, and filmmaker Erich von Stroheim. Their presence left an imprint on the building's identity within the neighborhood.
Today the building functions as specialized housing for senior residents and is not open to the public for tours. Visitors should view it from the street and respect the residential nature of the property.
The entire structure was physically divided and moved across Los Angeles to save it from demolition. This extraordinary relocation effort preserved all the architectural details intact during the transfer.
