Downey, Charter city in Los Angeles County, California
Downey is a city in Los Angeles County, located in the southeastern part of the metropolitan area about 13 miles (21 kilometers) from downtown Los Angeles. The city spreads across residential neighborhoods with single-family homes, commercial streets lined with shops and restaurants, and several parks featuring sports facilities and playgrounds.
The area originally belonged to Spanish mission territories and developed into agricultural land during the 19th century. During World War II, it became a center for aerospace production when Vultee Aircraft began manufacturing military planes.
The name honors John Gately Downey, California's seventh governor, whose influence still appears on street signs and public buildings throughout the area. Local festivals reflect the Hispanic community's traditions, with street markets and neighborhood gatherings that showcase traditional music and food.
Visitors can walk through residential areas or explore the commercial districts along major streets where shops and restaurants operate. The parks offer shaded areas and facilities that remain accessible during daylight hours.
The oldest operating McDonald's restaurant in the world stands here and has been serving customers since 1953. The original golden arches are still visible, and the building houses a small museum with memorabilia from the chain's early days.
