Vernon, Industrial city in Los Angeles County, United States
Vernon is an industrial city in Los Angeles County, covering 5.2 square miles (13.5 square kilometers) almost entirely devoted to factories, processing facilities, and warehouse complexes. Railway lines and highways cross the entire area, linking the plants to the greater Los Angeles region.
The settlement of Vernondale emerged in the late 19th century and became the incorporated city of Vernon in 1905, when industrialists began using the flat land for factories. Over the following decades, industrial infrastructure grew steadily while the residential population was intentionally kept small.
The place takes its name from Civil War veteran Captain George R. Vernon, who pushed for industrial development in this area. Today the tiny community serves almost exclusively as a workplace for tens of thousands of employees who work in the factories and warehouses.
Access is via several main roads and highway exits leading from different directions within Los Angeles. Most facilities are visible from public streets but not open for visits without prior arrangement.
In 2020 the city recorded only 222 permanent residents, making it the least populated incorporated city in California. During the day, however, more than 50,000 people work in the industrial facilities before leaving again in the evening.
