Linda Vista Community Hospital, Historic hospital in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, United States.
Linda Vista Community Hospital is a former hospital in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, California, now serving as senior housing. The six-story white concrete building stands on a roughly four-acre site on St Louis Street, overlooking Hollenbeck Park and the downtown area.
The Santa Fe Railroad opened a medical facility here in 1905 for its employees, operating until 1991. The current Mission Revival structure replaced the original building in 1938.
The name recalls the railroad company that built this facility for its workers, while the Mission Revival architecture echoes the Spanish missions of California. Today the complex serves as housing for low-income seniors and has left its original medical function behind.
After closing in 1991, the building underwent a roughly 40-million-dollar renovation to become 97 apartments for low-income seniors. The complex now carries the name Hollenbeck Terrace.
The hospital kept its own Jersey cows, chickens, and garden to supply fresh milk, eggs, poultry, and vegetables for patient meals. Film productions including Insidious, True Blood, and Buffy used this location for their hospital and medical scenes.
