El Mercado de Los Angeles, Mexican marketplace in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, United States.
El Mercado de Los Angeles is a three-story building in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, situated at the corner of First Street and Lorena Street. Each floor is divided into restaurants, shops, and entertainment spaces that together form a self-contained indoor marketplace.
The building opened in 1968 on land that had previously been used by a lumber business, and it was designed from the start as a community gathering place. Over the following decades it grew into a central reference point for the Latin American community in the neighborhood.
Live mariachi bands play inside the building throughout the day, giving the space a musical character that sets it apart from ordinary shopping centers. The music is heard on every floor and feels like a natural part of daily life in Boyle Heights.
The marketplace offers currency exchange between dollars and pesos as well as money transfer services to Latin American countries, all within the building. Weekends and midday hours tend to draw more visitors, so arriving earlier in the day generally makes it easier to move around.
A ceramic tile mural completed in 1991 covers part of the exterior walls and depicts the Mayan rain goddess through abstract patterns drawn from pre-Hispanic imagery. It is large enough to be visible from the street and often goes unnoticed by visitors focused on the entrance.
