West Covina, Residential city in San Gabriel Valley, United States.
West Covina is a city in the eastern San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County, California, located about 19 miles (31 km) east of downtown Los Angeles at 117 meters elevation. Residential neighborhoods with single-family homes spread across gently rolling hills, interspersed with wide streets and larger shopping districts.
The city was incorporated in 1923 after residents sought to prevent Covina from building a sewage plant nearby. In the following decades the area grew rapidly from agricultural land into a suburban community.
The name comes from neighboring Covina and marks the western location, while local parks and shopping centers serve daily as meeting points for residents from different communities. Several libraries and community centers host regular programs where languages and traditions from around the world become visible.
The Plaza West Covina shopping center offers more than 200 stores and restaurants that can be reached easily on foot or by car. Public parks and recreation facilities are scattered across the city and accessible via the street network.
The West Covina Sportsplex was built on a former landfill that was converted into a recreation area with a golf course and sports fields. This transformation shows how abandoned sites can become active leisure spaces.
