Bradbury, Residential city in Los Angeles County, United States
Bradbury is a small city spanning roughly 2 square miles at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, defined by spacious private estates. Lot sizes are intentionally large, typically between 2 and 5 acres, to maintain a rural feel throughout the area.
Lewis L Bradbury acquired roughly 2,750 acres of the former Rancho Azusa de Duarte in 1892 and built his home there. The area later incorporated as an independent city in 1957 after local property owners took steps to preserve it.
The three neighborhoods here maintain a strong equestrian culture, with many residents keeping horses on their sprawling properties. This tradition shapes how the community looks and functions in daily life.
The area is served by the Duarte Unified School District and policed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department. Visitors should know this is a private, gated community where access to many areas is restricted.
The city's creation was driven by a remarkable act of self-determination when property owners gathered 500 registered voters in 1957 to prevent annexation by neighboring towns. This decision allowed it to preserve its rural character and private nature to this day.
