Santa Clarita, Municipal center in Los Angeles County, California
Santa Clarita is a city in Los Angeles County, California, that spreads across valley terrain between mountain ranges. It consists of four neighborhoods: Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, and Valencia, each with residential areas and commercial centers.
The city was incorporated in December 1987, bringing together four separate communities that had existed as independent settlements. Before that, the area was mostly rural, shaped by ranching and agriculture since the 19th century.
The California Institute of the Arts, College of the Canyons, and The Master's University establish Santa Clarita as an educational center in northern Los Angeles County.
The city is located along Interstate 5 and State Route 14, offering direct connections to Los Angeles and the Central Valley. Most areas are accessible by car, while some of the surrounding mountain trails can be explored on foot.
Gold was first discovered here in 1842 at Placerita Canyon, six years before the famous California Gold Rush began. This makes it the first documented gold find in what is now the state of California.
