Saugus Speedway, Race track
Saugus Speedway is a racing track in Santa Clarita, California, built as a flat oval with a paved surface. The track measured just over half a mile in length and accommodated various types of automobile racing, with simple but sturdy grandstands where spectators could watch the action.
The site originated in 1927 as a rodeo arena called Baker Ranch Stadium, later purchased by cowboy actor Hoot Gibson who used it as a film set. In the 1930s it transformed into a racing venue with dirt oval events and grew into a major racing center by the 1950s with a paved surface.
The speedway served as a community gathering place for generations, where families and friends came together to watch races. Beyond racing events, it also hosted swap meets, car shows, and concerts, making it a popular spot for local gatherings and celebrations.
The track is relatively flat and easy to navigate, making it simple for visitors to find their way around. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the grounds are expansive and you will cover considerable distance to explore different areas.
The site served as a filming location for popular television series including The Dukes of Hazzard and Knight Rider, giving it a unique place in entertainment history. The concrete surfaces and distinctive grounds attracted filmmakers and helped keep the location memorable long after racing events ended.
