Superman: Escape from Krypton, Launched roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain, California, United States.
Superman: Escape from Krypton is a steel coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain that accelerates riders to 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour) in seconds before launching them up a vertical tower standing 415 feet (126 meters) tall. The structure uses an L-shaped track system where the cabins launch both forward and backward.
The coaster opened in 1997 under the name Superman: The Escape and held the title of the fastest and tallest coaster at the time. In 2011, it received its new name and backward-facing seats on one of its two trains after a renovation.
The theme recalls Krypton's destruction and surrounds riders with imagery from the hero's origin story, visible in the graphics and structure throughout the station area. Guests walk through a queue decorated with comic references that mirror the escape from the dying planet.
Riders must be at least 54 inches (137 centimeters) tall and store all loose items in the free lockers before joining the queue. On windy days or during maintenance, the coaster may remain closed, so checking the notice boards near the park entrance is helpful.
The coaster launches its trains using a magnetic system that works without physical contact and reaches full speed in under seven seconds. During the climb up the tower, riders experience several seconds of weightlessness before racing backward down the structure.
